ICM Unimog S 404, German Military Radio Truck

Description

The Unimog 404 is a small off-road truck ideal for traversing a wide variety of terrain. They found common use in the German military due to their practicality and suitability for different roles. It is one of the most recognisable vehicles of the Bundeswehr (German armed forces). In addition to the standard truck versions of the Unimog S, a body-van (‘Koffer’) variant was quite common. Some 16,000 vehicles were fitted with these body variants, and they had the longest service life among the Unimog S series trucks.

Most of these vehicles were used as radio communication machines. They were easily distinguished by their special type of hatches, antenna nests on the roof, and a complex large antenna on the rear wall of the body. Internal equipment included various radio stations such as EM 25, SEM 25 or SEM 25. The colouring of the vehicles was standard for the Bundeswehr, initially the drab olive colour “RAL 6014”, but in the 1980s was gradually replaced by a tricolour camouflage variant. The vehicle was popular in the Bundeswehr and was used by various units until the late 1990s.
