The US infantry was well armed and trained by the time the US entered World War II. Although being equipped with the most modern arms of the time, the troops initially lacked experience in major warfare. The first active land operations in Europe started in November 1941 in North Africa with “Operation Torch” and ended with the defeat of the Germans in 1945. In total, over 16 million Americans served their country in WWII.
