The Arleigh Burke class of guided missile AEGIS destroyers is considered to be the most capable and survivable range of combat vessels in the U.S. Navy. This class is important to the Navy, with a total of 57 ships planned for completion. The very first 8,300-tonne destroyer in this new class was DDG-51, the Arleigh Burke, which was commissioned on 4 July 1991. The design of the Arleigh Burke class incorporates shaping to reduce its radar cross-section, and it can effectively counter aircraft, cruise missiles and attack submarines.
