History – Chance Vought F4U Corsair: A Carrier-Based Legend
The Chance Vought F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw distinguished service during both the Second World War and the Korean War. Demand for the aircraft quickly outpaced Vought’s production capacity, leading to additional manufacturing by Goodyear and Brewster. Goodyear-produced Corsairs were designated FG, while Brewster-built variants were designated F3A.
From the delivery of the first prototype to the U.S. Navy in 1940 through to the final units delivered to the French Navy in 1953, a total of 12,571 Corsairs were produced across 16 distinct variants. This makes the F4U Corsair the longest-produced piston-engined fighter in U.S. history, with production spanning from 1942 to 1953.
The Corsair was flown by several allied forces, including the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, Britain’s Fleet Air Arm, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the French Aronavale. Smaller air forces also operated the Corsair into the 1960s. It quickly gained a reputation as the most capable carrier-based fighter-bomber of the Second World War.
Highly respected by both Allied and enemy pilots, the Corsair earned a formidable combat record. Some Japanese pilots considered it the most dangerous American fighter of the war, and the U.S. Navy reported an exceptional 11:1 kill ratio with the aircraft. In addition to its dogfighting prowess, the Corsair proved itself as an outstanding fighter-bomber, flying almost exclusively in that role during the Korean War and in the French colonial conflicts in Indochina and Algeria.
