Description
The Soviet I-16 fighter was the symbol of the Red Army Air Forces in the 1930s. Its designer, N.N. Polikarpov, was called the “King of Fighters.” The I-16 Type 5 was the second production version of the aircraft. With new cowling and a more powerful M-25 engine, it reached speeds of up to 450 km/h. During production, the aircraft received a new reinforced wing, larger wheels, and an open cockpit. Fighters of this type took part in the Spanish Civil War from 1936-39, in conflicts with Japan and Finland, and in the early stages of World War II.
