Description

One of the first monoplane fighter aircraft with retractable landing gear was the I-16, developed in the N.N. Polikarpov Design Bureau. The maiden flight was on December 30th, 1934. The “type 10” modification with four machine gun armament and M-25 engine was in production from 1937 to 1939. Some 934 I-16 type 10 planes were manufactured. These fighters took part in the Khalkhin Gol conflict and the Soviet-Finnish war. In the summer of 1941, I-16 fighters were the basis of Soviet Fighter Aviation and participated in air battles on all sectors of the Soviet-German Front.
